What is Approach Angle & Departure Angle
What is approach angle and departure angle? Jared, our chief tyre inflator explains the difference between the two terms. Go check out the video for a blow by blow explanation. Vehicle approach angle - An imaginary line between the lowest point of the car ahead of the front wheels and the tyre. Approaching an object taller than this angle will cause the vehicle to hit that object before the tyre has a chance to make contact. Similar to Departure Angle but on the opposite end of the vehicle. Vehicle departure angle - An imaginary line between the rear tyres of a vehicle and the lowest point of the vehicle behind the rear wheels. When reversing up to an obstacle or leaving an obstacle, any object steeper than this angle will be impacted by the body of the car. Similar to Approach Angle, but on the opposite end of the vehicle. So, approach and departure angles are the angle at which a vehicle can approach something or depart from it. So, the angle at which you're going to touch your nose or touch your bum, really. So, I'll give you a demonstration. So if we talk about approach angle, on the Ranger, it's really... It can actually approach something on this corner at angle Because I'm a home renovator I've actually got an app on my phone that will tell us the angle. So that is about 55 degrees. Whereas if we look at the Jeep Patriot full-size 4WD drive over here, then that has got a much less, much lower approach angle. So that's about 28 degrees. So, I mean, you can sort of see it. But it means that we can actually, when buying new cars or fitting bull bars or whatever, we can see a sort of a standard metric on how high an approach angle that vehicle is gonna have. So we'll show you a departure angle as well. So if we stick that under there, then my departure angle is roughly, what have we got here? Mind you, we got to allow for the tow bar there 'cause I've actually donked that, probably even put some overlay video of that donk , we got it on GoPro. So that's about 31 degrees, maybe 32 degrees. So, that's a lot shallower than what the approach angle is which is why I tend to donk the tow bar rather than actually donking the front, which I've done as well. But anyway, so that's approach and departure angles.
What is Ramp-over Angle?
Today Jared talks about vehicle ramp-over angle and what impact it has on your driving. It is not quite the same as Approach Angle and Departure Angle. The ramp-over angle is best visualised by how tall an imaginary pyramid under your vehicle would be before it hits the bottom of your car. Ramp-over angle is heavily influenced by your wheel base. Ramp over angle. So it's sort of the angle between your front tyres and the back tyres, sort of the maximum height hump that you can go over. So basically goes from an angle up to the middle here and an angle down to there but let's do a demonstration. I'll just hop in here. Excuse me. Ignore the, oh, no, not too bad with the snorkel So we're going through and I'm going to watch. Now, Finn the camera man to see when are we going to touchdown? Are we going to touch? We're not going to touch. So that's sort of a demonstration of ramp-over. So if that was a high, I'm actually surprised that we didn't touch, but if that was a high lump we'd touch. So that's ramp-over. If you ended up going over too high a thing then you end up turtled, which is what I did the other day. So got a little bit of footage of that with my boys' shot, but that's ramp-over people.
