Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Studio Overview
We're taking a look at the Michelin Pilot Sport 4, which is a replacement for the Michelin Pilot Sport 3. The Pilot Sport 4 tyre is a mix between a touring tyre with a dash of performance driving thrown in. Let's have closer look! Full Transcript: - G'day. Today, in our warehouse, we've got the Michelin Pilot Sport 4. So today in the warehouse, we've got the Michelin Pilot Sport 4, which actually replaces the Pilot Sport 3, and probably replaced it about a year and so ago now. So, this tyre is their road oriented tyre, from their more sportier range. So there's the Pilot Sport 4, which this one is, and there's the Pilot Sport 4S, which is sort of the next level up, then there's the PS Cup or Pilot Sport Cup. So, basically this one is your more road oriented tourer which maybe you can get high-spirited with. And then the 4S is going to be a little bit more aggressive again and then the Cup is more your track tyre that you can drive to track and drive home again but you probably wouldn't want to be driving on a day-to-day. So it's that fast road tyre that's a comfortable tourer, but have let's a closer look at what actually makes this an interesting tyre. So, any tyre in this category is going to have to fight that balance between being a comfortable and safe road tyre with being a fun and spirited, not quite track tyre, but something you can give it some whirling on the road. So they have to balance this with the compound that they use, the siping that the tyre has, and the stiffness of the carcass. So this tyre is supposed to be for performance driving, so one of the first that I noticed about it did seem, in comparison with your regular passenger tyres is that the compound is really quite a sticky sort of compound. So I don't know if you can hear that, but it's so sticky. And then also, you see these big, deep sipes here that run through the whole tyre, which are going to be good for evacuating all of that water that you might come across in the wet. And then also, you see these three strong stinter ribs? They go all the way around the tyre, so there's no breaks in those. So that's going to really give you that durability for when, or the strength for when you're putting the pedal to the ground. One thing you'll notice, though, that's a little bit different between this and perhaps a more sport oriented tyre, it's that the shoulders are not as solid as perhaps a more performance oriented tyre. Because again, that's trying to get that water out there, so it's balancing off between evacuating the water and having the strength here to allow you to corner faster. So this perhaps won't let you corner as fast as a more track oriented tyre, but it's going to be a heck of a lot safer in the wet for your regular passenger cars. So Michelin says that this tyre offers excellent steering control and a high level of reactivity, which means it's going to be able to be a bit more fun for when you're trying to make your passengers take in the twisties. And they also reckon it offers a high level of safety on the wet roads, so that means that hopefully they found that balance between it being a fun touring tyre and the wet weather performance as well. So one thing to know is this is an asymmetric tyre. So this is actually the inside of the tyre, and this is the outside of the tyre, and you can see, as we cross the tyre, the siping, the channelling, gets deeper also, it's deeper on the inside and shallower or narrower on the outside, which means that this shoulder, outside shoulder is going to be stiffer for that cornering capacity. But you've still got the channels on the inside here to get rid of the majority of the water out the back. So the PS 4 from Michelin covers quite a wide range of sizes. It goes from say, your hatchback sort of size through to your full-size sedan sort of size, so that's 205/50-16 all the way through to 325/30-21, so that's quite a narrow profile tyre. This particular set of tyres is actually going on our long-term test vehicle, it's a Renault Megane Cup, so sporty hatch. We'll be putting it on the track, as well as seeing how it goes over the next 10,000 kms just for day-to-day life. We've got the long term review of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres for you today. Grant has been driving on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 for well over 10.000km's now with his Renault Megane RS 265 Cup. Having had a series of 'fast' cars, Grant is no stranger to driving on performance tyres and giving them a proper workout. Jared from Tyre Review here, and I'm with Grant today and Grant's been spending the last six months or so - Yeah - doing 10,000 Ks on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in his so Renault Megane? - [Grant] Renault Megane 265 Cup car that's, yeah, RS sport car out of Renault. - [Jared] Yeah. Right. So how many kilowatts has it got? - [Grant] 200 - 200.. - All through the front wheels. So it can be a bit of a handful, but awesome car to drive, great road handling. - [Jared] And you've got a tradition of having fairly fast little cars haven't you? - Well I've had a range of them. Subaru WRXs, Porsche, some Porsches. Hey, few different things. - That's not bad. That's not bad at all. So in terms of the tyre on this car, how do you feel like they've performed for your day-to-day living? - Um. Since I put them on that was really a um. Straightaway it was a totally different car to drive The old tyres that I had on it really had no confidence in the dry, very little feedback. Since I put these on, feedback through the steering wheel was great grip levels and confidence with that has been awesome. Just been a pleasure to drive and total change to the way the car, car actually runs. - Yeah, so for taking them for a joy ride through the hills. - Ah, awesome. Yeah, it's a car that you can really push through the corners and have a lot of confidence, yeah you turn into a corner grip level straight away high, yeah changing road conditions through the corner, tyres just don't even think about giving up. I mean just hold on and hold on. So then the feel feedback through the steering wheel through those corners is just amazing. - What's the under steer characteristics of this car usually? - Um pretty, pretty neutral. Really?! - Yeah. That's good. - So certainly with these tyres on it's been pretty, pretty neutral. The old tyres. Yeah. It just was quite variable, I must say. - And the tyres, had the old tyres seen some wear and where were they've sort of, - That were actually I was gonna say probably 50% of the way through their life and they were just very, very horrible. Then they were average in the dry, in the wet diabolical. Couldn't wait to get rid of them. - Really? - Yep. Absolutely. - How long that give, you've done about 10,000 cars now, if you sort of had to look to see how much longer do you reckon your car on these tyres? - I look I'd say I'll get good 35000 K at least at this point in time. - That's pretty amazing for that grip level in this sort of car. - Ah, yeah And I look out to drive this every day to work, it's about a 70 kilometre round trip on open roads windy open road, so yeah. If I can do the speed limit, I'm doing the speed limit. - Very funny. - Yeah, it is a daily fun, so - So who would you recommend this tyre for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4? - In all honesty, general drivers, it's a great tyre from that perspective but if you had someone that wanted to have a bit more fun with a car that like this that you can actually have a bit of fun in it's a tyre that really suits that as well. I haven't actually had to go on the track with this yet, but with these tyres Just judging what it's like in the, on the dry roads. It's, yeah. I'd say anyone that wants to, yeah is a more adventurous driver if you want to say it that way. These tyres really suit. - Very well there's a track day coming up on the 21st here in at Baskerville so we might see you out there. - [Grant] That sounds like a good plan. - So Grant, you know, they're awesome, they corner well, they grip to the road well. What are the downsides of these tyres? - Um, probably really only noticed two, first one would be really that the road noise, certainly on, you know course chip sealed roads, the noise levels are probably a little higher than I might've anticipated. - In comparison to these previous tyres that you love so much. - Oh, not in comparison to others that I've had, you know it's just a bit noisier, but it could be partly the design of this particular car being a two-door.
