Cooper S/T MAXX Reviews

Cooper Logo
The S/TMAXX was developed after three years of testing in Australia’s outback to give you the toughest all-terrain performance. Coupled with the famous Armor-Tek3 construction, the S/T MAXX will tackle anything Australia has.

Key Features

  • Micro-Gauge Sipes reduce cutting and chipping whilst improving traction in the wet, giving you enhanced stability and longevity.
  • Enhanced Buttress Design provides additional off-road traction and a rugged appearance, giving you abrasion resistance and sidewall protection.
  • Stone Ejector Ribs and Varied Channels easily eject stones and gravel, protecting the carcass from stone drilling and maintaining a clear tread for enhanced rough road traction.
  • On top of high tensile body plies, the S/T MAXX features Armor-Tek3 Construction - an additional third ply on an 8° angle. Unique Armor-Tek3 Construction is engineered to give you over 2.5 times* more tear and impact damage resistance by reducing the rubber gaps by 50% to give you peace of mind when driving off-road. *Compared to standard 2-ply tyres.
  • Silica and Natural Rubber Compound is uniquely formulated combining silica with natural rubber to reduce cut and chip off-road and improve wet traction on-road.

They came on my car, had around 12-13mm tread remaining. Perform well in the beach and big family trips onroad. Mud grip has been decent for a aggressive l terrain. On a recent high country trip the tyres have been ripped to shreds, most of the outside lugs have huge slices nearly cutting them in half. I was very surprised as I was crawling up tracks in 1st gear with the diff locks in, not wheel spinning on crazy. All noticed one of the tyres has the common Cooper problem of cracking near the bead. Rubbish quality.

Bought a 2nd hand set of 275/70/17 with around 10000km on it. Went a highway trip from Brisbane to Cairns, then 2 land cruiser mountain trips and 2 Glass house mountain trips. Lost couple shoulder tread blocks after the first Camp road run (first track of the day). The two rear tyres almost unusable after the second GHM trip. Look at the photo yourself how come the rubber can be damaged like that with about 15000km and over 10mm tread depth left. I know the LC park and GHM are hard but that's why you buy these tyres. No one else in the team had any tread block cuts after the same trips. I had Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 for the past 4 years went through a lot more abuse never lost a tread block. I have no complaint on road grip and noise wise a little bit but very reasonable. Off-road traction noticeably less than the ATZ P3.

bad wear front tyres especially left hand tyre, (very lumpy) had service done & was advised to replace front tyres...took them to a suspension guy who said this was common for this brand of tyre...told me to put them on the rear & ride them out

Good 4x4 tyre but they are noisy and the ride is not great. In the wet I often lose traction and it can be quite dangerous if you accelerate to hard in those conditions. They would be more suited to someone who drove on dirt roads a lot and 4x4 tracks.

I put a set of 285/75/16'S on my Discovery before a big trip to the top end. I did 15,000km on very corrugated roads all through the NT and FNQ with dropped pressures. I also did a fir bit of heavy 4WDing and rock crawling around home. I had zero punctures, and at 20,000km I still seem to have zero wear. They are a very tough hard compound and as a result they ride very firmly. Grip offroad, on road and in the wet is excellent. They started whisper quiet but have gotten quite noisy now. A Petrol Discovery is very quiet, so I have sold them for a set of quieter all terrains.

When these tyres were new, they were excellent on and offroad. Very good in the sand. However, after about 15000km they started to wear very oddly. Now at 30000km, the tread on three of the four tyres goes up and down. So at low speeds, they are incredibly lumpy. These tyres were rotated every 10000km.
